Sunbury Softball Association’s ‘Introduction to Softball for Females’ program was a raging success for the association this past August.
Run over three Saturdays prior to the new season beginning, the program was structured to adopt more female players into the sport.
There was a good level of interest from a wide variety of age groups, with the aim to try and introduce the basic skills and rules that are required to play softball.
The first week consisted of basic skills – throwing, running, catching and batting.
The second week focused on positions, particularly explaining when and how each position is required to act, and how to support and backup other positions.
The final week included a fun-filled game with current members helping out – in order to guide and encourage the newer players. There was also a chance to develop existing players into positions they had not experienced.
Off the back of the program, SSA successfully increased their membership by 10%.
The successful program was designed and implemented by Linda Reeves and Joanne Dinsdale from SSA, with the hope of continuing to develop the program and grow women’s softball for years to come.
