Softball Victoria launches elite junior pathway academy

Softball Victoria is pleased to announce the inaugural Softball Victoria Winter Academy (SVWA) that will provide development opportunities for current and future Victorian representatives aged between 11 to 15 years.

The academy is designed to provide dedicated skill-based training for pathway athletes in the lead up to State team trials to be held in September.

This skill-based program has been created to enhance each athlete’s skills with a focus on three main proficiencies – defence, hitting and fitness – with programs written and delivered by highly skilled coaches.

  • Defence will involve: pitching, catching, infield and outfield;
  • Hitting will involve: hitting, bunting and running.

Speaking on the launch of the program, Softball Victoria CEO Nick Frayne said, “this academy is a key part of our development pathway and will provide an excellent introduction for our talented juniors to improve skills before State trials.”

“The change to the preparation schedule for all State teams is significant – and whilst it has been forced due to COVID-19 – the schedule will remain for the future – with the academy in winter leading in to State trials in September and finally squads selection in October.”

“We are encouraging all State Head and Assistant coaches to become involved, as there will be significant coach development opportunities and the ability to build networks across other teams and associations,” Frayne added.

This will act as an opportunity for State coaches to oversee the athletes’ performances at training before state selections. All athletes with an ambition to represent Victoria are welcome and encouraged to register now via the link below.

Cost: FREE (For SV registered members)

This 6-week program is aiming to start mid-July, subject to COVID-19 restrictions, with venues to be announced shortly.

It is envisaged that from 2021 the SVWA will include all age groups, however with the limited preparation in 2020 it was necessary to restrict ages to just junior athletes.
