Casey Softball Association and Sweeney Reserve will play host to this weekend’s Open State Championships to officially begin the year of state titles contested in 2021.
Due to last year’s COVID pandemic the 2020 open state championships were not held, with players’ more eager than ever to attack the diamond this time around.
Across Saturday and Sunday the Men’s and Women’s association teams will feature the best talent within their respective associations, vying for state championship glory in the Women’s Cup, Men’s Cup and Women’s Plate competitions.
In the Women’s Cup, four associations will have their aspirations firmly set on taking the championship.
On Saturday morning tournament hosts Casey meet Dandenong as the standalone round 1 match up, as 2019 champions Waverley begin their campaign in round 2 against Casey, while Frankston/Knox do-battle with Dandenong – also in round 2.
The Men’s Cup will open with host association Casey taking on Werribee, 2019 champions Dandenong will meet GEMSA, as Frankston battle Geelong/NDSA in round 1.
Over in the Women’s Plate, Melbourne return to the Open State Championships for the first time since 2013 – and will open proceedings against Northern District, GEMSA will face Werribee, while Geelong – with the bye in round 1 – take to the diamond in round 2 against Werribee.
Back in 2019 when this tournament last took place, Waverley took out the Women’s Cup – Dandenong secured a memorable victory in the Men’s Cup – as Sunshine emerged victorious in the Women’s Plate.
The top two teams at the end of the fixture rounds will face off in their respective division Grand Finals on Sunday afternoon.
