Waverley and Dandenong have stamped their authority on the Women’s Cup competition in an entertaining first day at the 2018 Softball Victoria Open Championships being held at Jelbart Park in Albury.
Both teams sit with two wins from three matches and will square up against each other this morning, the winner to gain automatic qualification to the Grand Final this afternoon.
Waverley have been well led by star pitcher Dale Stocker and a host of Victorian representatives while Dandenong have played complete team softball with strong and consistent performances from Brianna Dawson.
The Women’s Plate competition has also been competitive with Glen Eira sitting clear on top, undefeated after day one of competition.
The Glen Eira team boasts some elite level talent including Australian representatives Jess Bahn and Jackie Di Siervi but will face some strong competition on Sunday from Knox and Albury Wodonga; both of whom impressed throughout day 1.
Knox have been a surprise packet so far, ably led by Titans Coach Mark Rigg and Titans representative Bree Trimm.
In the Men’s Competition, Geelong and Dandenong dominated day one to sit atop their respective pools undefeated with three wins each after impressive performances. Werribee and Waverley now join the undefeated teams in the Cup competition, with the top two teams after Round 9 to play off for the Grand Final.
Victorian champion George Psimaris joins the already powerful Geelong outfit this morning whilst former Victorian representative Steven Dawson will be hoping to lead Dandenong to glory from the pitchers mound.
