Victoria has finished the 2017 Under 23 Women’s National Softball Championships in Redlands, Queensland in third position.
Friday saw no play take place due to inclement weather, resulting in changes to the structure of the finals with only a final between teams finishing first and second. The teams sitting third and fourth did not play a final, meaning that Victoria finished the tournament third.
On Saturday, Victoria took on New South Wales going down 3-1. It was a game that saw our women fight hard for all seven innings off the back of some awesome defence led by Alys Young, with both teams only conceding one error.
The Vics pulled off two double plays with Victoria Russell (3rd) and Elly Trevethan (1st) combining, and Russell (3rd) and Young (SS) also combining. Young really led from the front with six put outs from SS including a terrific line drive catch and two assisted outs. Natasha Strapps pitched a great game only giving up six hits, while Trevethan, Russell and Rebecca Schafer all contributed well. Schafer, Sarah Beales and Katherine Laemmle all got hits, with Laemmle sending the runner home.
Victoria’s second game on Saturday was against the table-topping Queensland team. The Vics came out swinging, with Schafer getting three hits (including a double), Tamar Hutchinson and Beales also getting doubles and Young and Laemmle getting singles.
Unfortunately, only Beales, Hutchinson and Schafer were able to turn their hits into RBI’s. Sarah Nolan and Strapps combined well from the pitching plate but struggled to hold the strong Queensland batting line up.
Highlights from the field included a diving catch to Hutchinson, and a diving line drive catch to Young at short stop, and a successful run down between 3rd and home with Young making the tag.
All in all, our Under 23 Women represented themselves and Victoria extremely well and the weekend culminated with Sarah Beales (catcher) and Katherine Laemmle (outfield) making the All-Tournament team.
Congratulations to Sarah & Katherine, and to all of the athletes and officials for the effort and performances, not only at the tournament but throughout the lead up period as well.
