The Victorian Women’s and Men’s Under 23 teams have made slow starts to their respective Under 23 National Championships campaigns on Wednesday.
The opening day of the Under 23 Nationals at Redlands in Queensland saw both teams play two games each, with Victoria failing to register a win.
Victoria’s Under 23 Women’s team confronted two high quality opponents first up in the visiting US Athletes team and Queensland; going down 11-0 in both games. Despite the pair of losses, the Vics will be better for the run as they seek to improve on their third place finish at last year’s Nationals.

Meanwhile, the Men’s team were making their return to the Under 23 Nationals stage after a 10-year hiatus from the Men’s competition.
They started strong in both games, with Brad Nicholson pitching really well to secure Victoria an early lead. Steven Dawson hit a home run against QLD that touched the top of the light pole at centre field, while Henry Mullan was very solid at 2nd base and in box getting on base consistently. Same Beales scored 3 RBI for the day. However, they were unable to sustain their scoring run in either game, finishing 4-10 in both.
Moving forward, the team will be encouraged by a number of positive signs shown on the opening day.
