Victoria has had a mixed day in the respective Open Women’s, Under 17 Girls and Under 17 Boys National Championship events on Day 3.
In the Open Women’s, the Victorian Titans welcomed USA Softball representative Delanie Gourley into the squad for their Day 3 games against NSW and Queensland.
Gourley has been a part of the US Women’s team since 2016 and a member of the Florida Gators since 2014. She was a part of the USA’s World Cup of Softball Silver Medal winning team in 2016 and helped the USA team to a Gold Medal at the 2016 Women’s Softball World Championships.
While the injection of Gourley’s talent and experience was a welcome addition for Victoria, it wasn’t enough to stop the Titans from going down in warm conditions to the two leading teams in the competition, who were clinical in their batting performances.
Day 4 will see the Titans take on the SA Starz (10:30am) and NSW Firestars (1:00pm) as they look to add to their tally of wins for the 2018 campaign.
The Under 17 Girls were gallant in their two games against South Australia and Queensland on Day 3 at Blacktown.
The prospect of hot conditions saw the first game against South Australia scheduled for 2:00pm shifted to 8:30am, but the early start didn’t seem to faze the Vics who exhibited some excellent fielding across the board. Unfortunately, the Vics couldn’t quite get the job done with the batting, going down 5-3.
Weather was again a factor in the Vics’ second game against Queensland, with a storm delaying the start of the game by two hours. When the game eventually got underway, the Vics showed glimpses of what they are capable of as a unit, but it was Queensland who secured the win on the back of a strong all-round performance.
Day 4 will see the Under 17 Girls look to make it two wins from two against WA for the tournament at 7pm, before taking on the ACT at 9:30pm.
The Under 17 Boys are still on the look out for their first win of the 2018 Nationals campaign after going down to the top two teams in NSW and Queensland on Monday.
However, the Vics have made steady improvement throughout the tournament and will give themselves every chance on Day 4 to get on the board in their games against WA and the ACT at 4:30pm and 7:00pm respectively.
