Team entries now open for Knox Pre–Victorian Masters competition

The Knox & District Softball Association Pre-Victorian Masters competition will return in 2017, with expressions of interest for the tournament now being taken.

With the World Masters Games taking place in Auckland, New Zealand in April, organisers have compressed this year’s competition into a three-day competition format to give both men’s and women’s teams time on the diamond before heading to the Victorian Masters Championship in Mooroopna on the June long weekend.

The competition will be run on Sunday afternoons at Gilbert Park, Knoxfield, and is open to all teams. The Knox Pre-Victorian Masters competition has been a very successful competition training event for the last few years, with organisers hoping to see even more teams take part this year.

The planned days for the competition are the May 7, 21 and 28, with the proposed format of competition (depending on number of team entries) seeing each team playing two games each week. Games will be played at 1.00pm and 3.00pm, and will be 90 minutes long (the usual “mercy” rules will apply if needed).

In general, players should be of Master’s age (over 35 years of age). However, if teams are short of players on any particular week, then younger players are most welcome.

To cover KDSA and umpiring costs, a small charge of $5 per player per game is to be levied. This is to be collected by the team, (captain, coach, manager etc.) and is payable to a KDSA official in the club rooms before the start of each game. Teams may choose to pay for both games before the start of the first game to minimise administration time.

The Knox Pre-Victorian Masters competition is also an opportunity for umpires to fine tune their skills, with teams encouraged to have an umpire come along each day. These umpires will split the $50 per game allocated for umpires. If there is only one umpire on the game, then that umpire will receive $25. The games will be played to ‘flexible’ rules to allow teams to focus on training and trying players in different positions.

Teams are responsible for registering any NEW players with Softball Victoria.
