Description of Background / Expertise:

Involvement in the Sport:

Bron started playing Softball at 13, and played as a catcher, short stop & left field.

Bron represented Sale at numerous State Championships, and started coaching softball at 16 with school, club and Sale teams. Bron has also completed Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses.

Bron also played for Deakin University at multiple Australian University Games, and continued to play as an adult socially with Melbourne Softball Association slow pitch competition.

Ruth Caldwell

Board Position: Board Chair

Date Elected: September 2017

Description of Background / Expertise:

Ruth brings governance and stakeholder management expertise to the board, through her role in advising City of Melbourne Councillors in portfolios as diverse as Finance and Governance to Environmental Sustainability. Her current role as Program Controller for the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal Program brings additional financial, procurement and project management experience.

She has a Bachelor Degree in Arts, double majoring in Political Studies and Japanese and a Certificate in Governance Practice. Ruth has significant experience working with the Japanese government and business communities both in Japan and in Melbourne.

Involvement in the Sport:

Ruth has been involved with the Northwood Falcons Softball Club since she was old enough to start playing T-ball. She’s a player and coach and more recently a Masters competitor.

Alison Lyons

Board Position: Director

Description of Background / Expertise:

General Manager Gymnastics Development at Gymnastics Victoria and Director of Pedals Australia a small business providing cycling experiences through the Yarra Valley.

5 Years in Sport Governance and over 10 years of working in the Recreation and Fitness sector including managing gymnastics businesses in the Middle East and in Canada. A strong focus on strategic planning and evidence based decision.

Involvement in the Sport:

My high school experience of playing Softball probably doesn’t warrant much in terms of involvement however my interest to support the growth and success of female sport in Victoria has encouraged me to be more involved.  I have a passion for the advocacy of Women in Sport and the strength of sports who have a history of inclusiveness to lead the way in female participation. Furthermore I’m interested supporting the role Softball plays in encouraging many Victorian’s to be involved in sport from participation to high performance.

Ben Byrnes

Description of Background / Expertise:

CPA, with nearly 20 years of Industry based financial experience.  I am currently the Financial Services Manager for a large agricultural company.  My specialties are Financial Reporting, Taxation and Compliance, Audit Planning.

Involvement in the Sport:

I began playing Softball in 1991 when I was 11 years old. A friend from school introduced me to the sport.  I made my first state champs rep team playing in the Open Men’s in 1996 when I was 16 and will be playing my 16th state Championship this year.  I represented Victoria in U/23 Men’s in 2001 and 2002.  Then in Open Men’s in 2003 and the Championship team in 2004.

I have coached various state champ junior and senior teams.

I have held various club-based committee positions around the Werribee Association.

Michelle Clyne

Board Position: Director

Description of Background / Expertise:

Michelle has more than 20 years experience working in sports media management at the Australian Football League and the St Kilda Football Club.

Michelle is the AFL Publicity and Promotions Manager and the AFL Women’s Media Manager. Her expertise includes media planning, project management, media releases, social media planning and implementation, crisis management, match day media, events and sponsorship announcements.

Has a Master’s in Business (Sports Management), a Graduate Diploma in Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Involvement in the Sport:

A softballer with the Northwood Falcons in the Waverley Softball Association for two decades, she has also played Melbourne Softball Association slowpitch with the same team during this time and regularly plays in Masters tournaments.

Prior to this was a provisional state league netballer.

Member of the AFL Victoria Women’s Advisory Board 2015-2016.

Northwood Falcons committee member 2013-present.

Media Liaison at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Anthony Bradstreet

Description of Background / Expertise:

Anthony is a transformation Manager with a large Australian bank and has a long career in technology and leadership roles.

He has significant background strategy development and facilitating the defining and planning of multi-year plans.  His current role is focusing on managing transformational change across technology and business teams.

He brings experience in ICT, strategy development, procurement and governance.

Involvement in the Sport:

Anthony has been involved in Softball for ten years as a parent, administrator, coach and umpire.  He is passionate about growing the sport and encouraging new players into the game.

Roles in softball included:

  • Past president of the Monarch Softball Club
  • Past president Northern District Softball Association.
  • Level 3 coach coaching at club, association and state level.
  • Level 1 umpire.

Mike Billing

Board Position: Director

Description of Background / Expertise:

Mike is an experienced sports business professional having worked in a diverse range of roles both in Australia and internationally and ranked at number 13 in Chief Marketing Officer Magazine’s inaugural Top 50 CMO’s in Australia in 2015.

Mike has a breath of experience working across a wide range of roles in the sporting industry. He has worked across international multi sport events, such as the Commonwealth Games an Asian Games, the peak government body for sport tasked with driving participation in the UK; Sport England, professional sporting clubs in Australia; Melbourne Heart and Melbourne Storm as well as the Operations Manager of the Sporting Shooters Association (Victoria).

Mike is currently a Director of Captura Marketing which is a marketing services, project management and communications business and has worked with a range of clients in sport and the wider marketing industry.

Involvement in the Sport:

Other than playing at school and watching on TV, Mike has had limited direct contact with the sport of softball but is very interested to learn more and understands the impact that strong sporting organisations have at a local level.

Troy Buntine

Board Position: Director

Description of Background / Expertise:

Troy has built a wide-ranging career to date in sports and entertainment marketing both in Australia and the UK, from all perspectives: agency leader, rights holder and corporate partner.

He is currently the Director of a full-service marketing agency, predominately specializing in the commercialisation of sport, inclusive areas such as sponsorship strategy and execution, membership growth, patron experience and major event production. Troy specialises in bringing partnerships to life at both the elite and community levels of sport, as well as other sectors, such as large scale retail.

His key strengths are derived from a journey that has included various roles across the sports marketing industry, covering off 8 Australian Open Tennis tournaments, 8 AFL Grand Finals, 2 Olympic Games, multiple polo events domestically and internationally, multiple cricket series and golf tournaments, as well as commercial sponsorship strategy and activation for over 20 blue chip brands.

At the grassroots level, direct strategic involvement in nationwide participation programs across four major sports here in Australia, coupled with an active role on the board of his local club in A-Grade Amateur Football, enables him to bring a wealth of industry experience and a broad contact network to his club’s advantage.

Interest and/or Involvement in the Sport:

Aside from regularly watching the game locally with his three year-old daughter who is eager to play, Troy doesn’t have a personal background in softball, but he is passionate about community sport and is looking forward to bringing a fresh perspective to assist the board, clubs, members and supporters in leading the way nationally for development in all areas.
