Frankston and Northern District capped off stellar tournaments to solidify themselves as the best Under 17 associations the state has on offer.
Against fierce weather conditions, Northern District proved they could outlast Sunshine/Dandenong on route to State Championship glory.
They were the two-standout teams of the weekend in the Girls Cup. It was the Grand Final we were all expecting, but unsure of whom would take out the title.
The pair played off in consecutive matches Sunday afternoon. In round 10 Sunshine/Dandenong made the initial statement in a convincing (16-4) victory over the eventual champions.
Northern District didn’t have to wait long to get their revenge, with the rematch next up on the schedule.
This time the stakes were higher, Grand Final glory was up for grabs.
Northern District saved their best softball of the weekend to last, gaining the upper hand in a high quality bout, securing victory (4-2) and state championship pride.
The race to secure a position in the Boys Cup Grand Final was as intense as we’ve seen.
The top four ranked associations were extremely competitive against each other all weekend, with it all coming down to who could peak at the tournament’s climax Sunday afternoon.
On home soil, it couldn’t have been a sweeter way to end the weekend for the Frankston Boys.
Back in round 10, their tournament looked over when they managed a (6-6) draw against Sunshine/Dandenong. However, being the higher ranked team granted them the right to progress through to the Grand Final.
Raining heavily in the afternoon, Albury Wodonga got the advantage against Werribee/GEMSA for being the higher ranked association, which set up a mouth watering Grand Final showdown.
It was an all-round team effort from Frankston, who used their home soil to advantage, hitting brilliantly and pitching superbly to knock over Albury Wodonga (13-1) and claim historic back-to-back State Championship triumphs.
In the Girls Plate Grand Final, a talented Waverley team emerged as victors against a brave Knox (13-11). The high scoring affair when down to the wire, but Waverley’s big hitters stood strong to secure the Plate title.
