Four Victorians receive national call ups

Four Victorian softball figures have been selected for national duties as announced by Softball Australia yesterday.

The first of the announcements saw scoring stalwart Helen Edwards appointed as the statistician to the Australian Open Men’s Team, the Aussie Steelers, for the 15th WBSC Men’s Softball World Championship in July 2017.

Edwards has served as the statistician for the Australian Open Men’s team from 2006 – 2015, attending three ISF Men’s World Championships and six other international events during that period.

Edwards’ contribution to the sport was also formally recognised last year when she was also inducted into the Softball Australia Hall of Fame.

Edwards will be joined at the World Championships in Whitehorse, Canada by Victorian Open Men’s stars Ryan Sinclair and Lewis Weldon, who were selected as part of the 17-man Aussie Steelers squad.

Weldon will be one of seven Steelers players who will be making their senior World Championship debuts, while Sinclair will be part of the core group of experienced players looking to improve on Australia’s fourth place showing at the last World Championships in Saskatoon, Canada in 2015.

An exciting 24 hours for Victorian softball was capped off with the news that Natasha Holt was selected as the sole Victorian in the 2017 Aussie Junior Spirit team for the 12th Junior Women’s Softball World Championship in Florida in July.

Holt was named in the 17-strong touring party based on her performances at the Under 19 National Championships in Perth in January, where she was one of two captains of the Victorian side.

Holt was also one of four Victorians chosen in the initial squad of 27, which included Narisse Privitera, Gemma Hamilton and Rebecca Schafer.
